Аir-Сonditioned Sunday

Today we installed an AC, in fact - 2 air conditioners.

One of them is portable, though, not really. It’s  big and loud, but serves its purpose. We put it in the living room.  It cools the room and the kitchen.

We have owned it for, maybe, 3 years by now.

We purchased the second one literally today at the “ocean state job lot” store. This is the window AC. We could only install it in the spare bedroom.  All other windows are incompatible with ACs.

These two “guys” really made the difference in the house.

The air has become drier, temperature - lower. My husband and I sweat less.

You know, in Tomsk (Siberia, where I am from) we didn’t have such bad humidity. We would have it before the sunderstorm and maybe a little after, but not like here.

I never learned to like the hot summers. I simply didn’t have time to enjoy it.

Now I don’t know what to feel. I just take what Mother Nature gives us. These AC  “guys” help to be tolerant.

Today we had one more reason to remember my life in Siberia. My husband and I were talking about spinach, LOL.

I have some spinach growing in my garden. But I don’t know how to eat it. I add some leaves to the salad, but I know there are other ways to prepare healthy greens.

Well, I fried it today. And ate it with my lunch.

I would appreciate it if you would share with me how you cook spinach, or just tell me the name of the dish and I'll Google it.

By the way, in just a few days we will be eating our cucumbers. Tomato plants have small tomatoes. That's promising. I think I'm going to get some peas this year. Although, who knows who will get them first (me or the birds).

We have a lot of apples this summer. I see them on the grass. lol.

With a plum tree, everything is easier - no plums.

From May Snow to Summer Mosquitoes: A Tale of Two Cities

May 22, and it is snowing in Tomsk. You could say "still" or "again"—both would sound right. And yet, the cool May weather hasn't slowed down the mosquitoes. According to a report by RIA Tomsk, cold weather doesn't kill off the larvae of these blood-sucking insects. The early-spring species have already taken flight "to hunt," and a mass emergence is expected by late May when warmer weather finally arrives. I wish I could say that we don't have mosquito problems here, but we do. I think a lot of it depends on neighbors who keep containers or pools of stagnant water in their backyards, where mosquitoes happily breed and multiply. My husband already got his first bite of the season. Let’s hope for the best this summer. For now, though, Tomichi (Tomsk citizens) aren't too worried about mosquitoes; their real problem, now and always, is ticks. Tomsk had a few warm days earlier this spring, and the ticks became active immediately. Every sprin...

Epiphany 2025

Russian January is …kind of… rich on holidays. January 7th- Christmas. January 14 - Old New Year. January 19th - Epiphany In the Orthodox Church, Epiphany, or The Baptism of the Lord, is one of the most important holidays and is celebrated in Russia on January 19 (January 6, Old style). The holiday is dedicated to the baptism of the Savior in the waters of the Jordan River by John the Baptist. The holiday is non-rolling, it is always celebrated on January 19th. It begins on the evening of January 18, when Orthodox Christians celebrate Epiphany Eve.  Christmas Holidays also end at this time. The period between these two holidays (we don’t talk about the Old New Year)  is called Yuletide (Christmastide, Holy Days). A special celebration of the 12 days after Christmas exists not only among the Slavic peoples, but also in other countries. The main tradition of the holiday is the consecration of water. It is believed that water consecrated on the eve of Epiphany has a blesse...

Folded Book Vase

Another crafty Wednesday at the New Bedford Public Library Wilks Branch! This month’s project, Folded Book Vases , a super creative way to upcycle old books into stunning floral displays. It was so cool to see everyone get in touch with their artistic side and also give new life to books that might have otherwise been discarded. As always, the participants surprised me and themselves with their creativity. We've all agreed to meet again next month for our next crafty adventure.
