December, aircrafts, cold weather in Russia.

We talked with my husband at dinner.

He asked if the groceries had become cheaper (in America)?

-No. At least I haven’t noticed a difference.

I did read the news in Tomsk. You know, I do it often.

Ria Tomsk says,

In October, inflation in Tomsk oblast was 1.1%. Prices of tomatoes, bananas, eggs, imported used passenger cars, and economy class flights to Moscow rose the most.

I kept reading:

In November, inflation was 1.2%.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, eggs, gas engine fuel, and travel in a “platskart” to Moscow have risen in price.

Not plane tickets, but “platskart tickets”.

Do you know what a“platskart” is?

I went to the Amtrak website to figure out the wording.

Platskart - second-class, couchette carriage, Roomette, accessible bedroom with no toilet?..

Imagine a compartment without doors. In the old overnight trains, there were also sleeping places (berths) in the corridors.

I found photos on the website. It's an old carriage. Perhaps there are more comfortable carriages now, but certainly not everywhere.

Here is the website

It takes 2-3 days to travel from Tomsk to Moscow by train. By plane - 4-5 hours. But now people prefer trains.

Why?

Because the planes started... no, not falling, breaking in the air.

On December 7, Ulan-Ude, Buryatia, a TU-204 aircraft was making a cargo flight to China. His engine caught fire.

The head of Buryatia, Alexei Tsydenov, said that the plane took off, maneuvered, dumped fuel and landed. There are no casualties…

December 8, Novosibirsk (remember, the city not far from Tomsk). The S7 airline's flight from Novosibirsk to Moscow returned to the airport after 20 minutes of flight. Passengers noticed the fire, the prosecutor's office suspended the pilots from flights, and the airline denied the speculation of passengers who suggested that the engines had caught fire.

December 8, Mineralnye Vody (a city in the south of Russia).

The Airbus A319 with flight number FV 6358 took off from Mineralnye Vody at 17:50 according to the schedule. After 40 minutes of flight, when the plane reached the Caspian Sea, where it was supposed to turn towards St. Petersburg, the crew reported a short-term operation of the pressure sensor.

The plane turned around, lowered altitude and successfully landed at the departure airport.

On December 11, in the morning, an AN-12 military transport plane was supposed to make an emergency landing in Komsomolsk-on-Amur on a flight from Nizhnevartovsk.

It is known that there are 12 people on board. All operational teams of the airport are on alert. What caused the incident is not reported.

I can't find any other news about this plane. Some websites don't let me on their pages.

Information is limited now in Russia.

Nevertheless, the fleet doesn’t stand still.

Specialists of the Siberian Chemical Plant (SCP, part of Rosatom's TVEL fuel company) have begun testing a press for the production of fuel pellets for the BREST-300 reactor, according to the company's website on Monday.

Do you remember that the Siberian Chemical Plant is an enterprise in Seversk that unites four plants of the nuclear industry.

One of the main directions of the company's work is to meet the needs of nuclear power plants in uranium for nuclear fuel.

It is located in the closed city of Seversk near Tomsk.

This morning, on the Popular Politics channel, I saw a video message from residents of the town of Seversk. Naturally, they turned to President Putin, asked for doctors (narrowly focused specialists), who are sorely lacking in the city.

In Soviet times, this town received much better security and supplies. Everything is changing, not always for good.

Well, about the weather.

Twelve people, including one child, received frostbite of varying degrees in the Tomsk region over the past week; five Tomsk residents needed hospitalization, an employee of the regional health ministry told RIA Tomsk on Monday.

Fortunately, no one died. But it's unpleasant.

Forecasters warned that in the period of December 8-13, in some places in the region, the temperature may drop below - 40 ° F degrees.

Warming to 19 °F is expected in the second half of December.

Four days and Three nights of Vacation in Vermont

I love going on vacation, but I love coming back even more. I'll tell you about the most remarkable activities for me. I will try briefly… We spent one night out of 3 in a tent. (We actually planned to have 2 nights in a tent, but the weather decided for us).  We visited Sugarbush Farm and Billings Farm & Museum, stopped at a store selling sheds and cottages, looked at the cider production process (Woods cider Mill), met with a representative of the company that will drill a well on our site, and asked questions to city officials.  And, of course, we admired the beauty of the season. It’s a pity that we couldn’t stop on the highway for photography.  At this time of the year, tourists travel to Vermont and New Hampshire specifically to admire the foliage. Daniel heard about the town of Woodstock even before the vacation. Therefore, we began to look for sights that can be seen there. As the first attraction, Google gave us The Sugarbush Farm. Google says: “ Rural...

Old New Year

Do you know what day is today (Jan 13)?  Russians celebrate the Old New Year on the night of January 13-14. How did it happen that Russians celebrate the New Year twice?  Simply by adopting a different calendar. Of course, it was not really simple, but after the October Revolution (1917), the Bolsheviks switched from the Julian calendar to Gregorian one. Because of this, all the dates moved 13 days ahead. The year 1919 began on January 1st but in accordance with the new Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar was 2 weeks behind the Gregorian one, as a result of which the celebration of the new year was postponed from January 14th to January 1st. The Old New year isn't an official holiday. There are definitely no people who would remember the old calendar. Russians, by definition, like to celebrate holidays. The more reasons to celebrate, the better. The Old New Year is usually less festive. There may be no more gifts under the tree.  Many Russians will wait until t...

The 36-hour Day

October 20, 2013.  I was flying to America towards my unknown future. The unknown future did not frighten me absolutely. On the contrary, it was incredibly intriguing: how will my life turn out, where will I work, with whom will I make friends? I didn’t have questions like “Will I be able to get accustomed?”. The question was: “When?”.  Like many Russian women I’m hardy, determined, and purposeful. The main thing was not to get lost on the way. The trip was long and inconvenient. I wasn’t worried about geography, I just picked the cheapest tickets. I flew from Tomsk to Moscow, then to Los Angeles and then to Boston. I have never in my life traveled abroad. I was very nervous about the long trip. I was not  afraid to fly. But all these security, take your belt and shoes off, cell phone out of pockets, endless lines, navigating in big airports. Leaving Tomsk was easy from that point of view. I will not touch emotions though.  Moscow    At the Moscow ai...
